Purpose: The purpose of this retrospective record review was to investigate dental recall attendance after dental treatment using general anesthesia (GA) and procedural sedation between January 2022 to May 2023 at the Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHC) Children’s Village or Lincoln Avenue dental clinics.
Methods: This was a retrospective chart review of 513 patients who received oral sedation or GA at Children’s Village and Lincoln Avenue dental clinics between January 2022 – May 2023. Charts were screened to meet inclusion criteria. The patient's information on age, gender, type of anesthesia, recall in one year after treatment completion, and residence location were analyzed. Significance was set at the P < .05 level.
Results: Within the study population, 43% of patients werebetween the ages 5 to 6 years old with a slight predilection of males at 59%. Sixty percent of the patients live in the city of Yakima, 36% of the patients live in Yakima County, and 2% of the patients live outside of Yakima County. A total of 38% General Anesthesia and 56% of oral sedation patients did not return for the recommended recall visit.
Conclusions: Although the oral sedation patients experienced higher recall rates than general anesthesia patients; both groups showed poor recall attendance. Location of primary residency to the dental clinic did not affect recall attendance in this patient population.
