Purpose: The goal of this study is to assess the opinions of parents of pediatric dental patients diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and/or ADHD regarding their perceptions of which categories of sensory behavioral management techniques they feel work best for their child. The hope is that this study can help to inform dentists on what techniques may be more successful than others to incorporate into daily practice. The objective is that this information can further help to combat the dental anxieties of the population of children with ASD and ADHD.
Methods: This study will be based upon survey data collected from the parents of pediatric dental patients and pediatric medical patients at Woodhull Medical Center aged 5-18 who are diagnosed with ASD and/or ADHD. The survey will consist of a list of behavior management techniques commonly used and the parent will be asked to use a checklist to signify if they feel that their child responded well to a certain technique and a ranking system in which they will be asked to rank which technique they feel helped their child succeed the best.
Results: Results of the current study are pending as surveys are to be distributed. Analysis will be completed once the study period has concluded.Â
Conclusion: The hypothesis is that there will be a significant difference in the success, according to parents’ perception, of utilizing a specific sensory group of behavior management techniques in pediatric patients with autism and/or ADHD versus other sensory groups of behavior management techniques.
