Impact of Sensory-Adapted Dental Environment on Behavioral Outcomes Among Children
Eckstein K, Dávila M, Governale L, Prosperi A, University of Florida, Naples, FL
Purpose: Children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) face increased risks for oral health issues due to motor, cognitive, and sensory challenges. Sensory-adapted dental environments (SADEs) aim to reduce stimuli and enhance cooperation. This study assessed the impact of sensory room visits on behavioral outcomes at the Special Day Foundation in Naples, Florida.
Methods: Retrospective analysis of 219 pediatric patient records from the University of Florida Naples Children and Education Foundation pediatric dental clinic was conducted, spanning from October 2022–August 2024. After excluding patients treated under sedation following sensory room visits, 135 patients remained. Patient behavior was classified according to the Frankl Scale. Diagnoses, frequency of sensory room visits, and treatments administered from 3 consecutive visits were evaluated. Univariate and bivariate analyses, including chi-square tests, were performed.
Results: The mean age was 9.1 ± 3.8 years, and 74% were male. The most common diagnoses included autism spectrum disorder (n=105, 79%) and developmental delay (n=106, 48%). The average number of sensory room visits was 3.2 ± 1.6, with a range from 1-5 visits. Patients who completed 3 visits, compared to those with 1 visit, were more likely to have Frankl ratings of positive (42% vs. 26%) and definitely positive (36% vs. 26%); P < .001.
Conclusion: Regular use of the sensory room was associated with improved cooperation, suggesting benefits of SADEs for children with special healthcare needs. Clinical trials are needed to further evaluate the impact of SADEs in the clinical setting.
