Abstract: This study aims to evaluate the hypothesis that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are more likely to require comprehensive oral rehabilitation under general anesthesia. This study seeks to emphasize the importance of prevention, proper oral hygiene, and effective home care for patients with ASD. Building on prior research from Staten Island University Hospital (SIUH) in 2022, this study incorporates additional data to focus on the increased likelihood of patients with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) being treated in the operating room (OR) under general anesthesia (GA) or in clinical settings. Comparisons will be made across different age groups, categorized according to Piaget’s theory of cognitive development: 2–7 years (pre-operational stage) and 7–16 years (concrete and formal operational stages). This retrospective randomized cross-sectional study examines medical records of 600 patients aged 2–16 years, with 300 charts from the 2–7 age group and 300 charts from the 8–16 age group for statistical significance. Among these patients, diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are reviewed, and records are analyzed to determine whether the patients underwent or were scheduled for complete oral rehabilitation (COR) under general anesthesia (GA).
