Abstract:

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility of use of an electronic note template to evaluate and record caries arrest of 38% Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF) application at New York University College of Dentistry’s Pediatric Clinic (NYUCD-PD).

Methods: A template was designed based on data extraction sheets from SDF trials to collect baseline characteristics of treated teeth, application methods, and caries arrest at subsequent visits. The template was implemented voluntarily on October 31, 2023 within 27 post-graduate students. A retrospective chart review was conducted to evaluate utilization of the template and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Residents’ feedback was collected and analyzed qualitatively to identify barriers to utilization of the template.

Results: 392 visit encounters on 250 patients constitute the preliminary analysis. These results show that the note template was effective in identifying arrested lesions through characteristics of consistency and reapplication. Within residents, template utilization ranged from 0% (never used) to 100% (always used), with 11 people utilizing the template over 50% of the time and 16 people using it less than 50% of the time. Residents’ reported barriers for utilization include: time restraints, tediousness when reporting multiple lesions, and accessibility within the system. Final analysis pending.

Conclusion: Although standardized electronic note templates are an effective method of evaluating and documenting caries arrest in SDF-treated teeth, further investigation is required to improve their feasibility and practicality in an educational setting.
