Purpose: The increasing use of digital and social media (DSM) as an information source presents both opportunities and challenges for dental education, particularly in combating misinformation. This study aimed to evaluate potential biases stemming from personal DSM use among pediatric dental residency program directors and their perceptions of DSM’s impact on dental education.
Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted via email, targeting pediatric dental program directors and associate directors nationwide. Survey items assessed demographics, personal DSM use, and attitudes toward DSM and misinformation in dental education. Statistical analyses included descriptive statistics, chi-squared tests, and ordered logistic regression.
Results: Eighteen directors (18%) completed the survey. Findings suggested a positive, though statistically insignificant, association between personal DSM use and recognition of DSM’s value and risks in dental education (x=18; P =.5). All respondents expressed concern about DSM misinformation and evolving use of DSM in dental education. There was general agreement on the need for digital literacy training.
Conclusion: The study highlights the importance of addressing DSM misinformation in dental education and calls for standardized curricular models to equip future professionals with the skills to critically evaluate digital information.
