Purpose: The goal of this retrospective survey study is to identify, quantify, and describe the relationship between race and Patient Family Experience (PFE) metrics in an academic, hospital-based pediatric dental practice in the US.
Methods: PFE survey responses from all ambulatory dental encounters at a large, urban children’s hospital system from January 1, 2022 and January 1, 2024 were evaluated via a cross-sectional analysis. PFE responses received in English and Spanish were included. Primary predictors include race, patient-provider racial congruence, patient ethnicity, and family primary language. Neighborhood-level socioeconomic deprivation, patient sex and age, and location of care were adjusted for in analyses. Outcomes were PFE survey scores for 9 questions that address overall experience, respect, trust, communication, and safety. Scores were categorized using the presence of a “top-box” score, defined as a 9 or 10 for questions on an 11-point scale or a 4 on a 4-point scale, consistent with industry standard benchmarks in PFE metrics.
