The Effect of Mobile App for Improving Oral Hygiene in Children

Purpose: Our study aims to investigate the impact of two different oral health education approaches: mobile application (Disney Magic Timer App) and conventional oral health education on oral hygiene behavior by using the Turesky modification of the Quigley-Hein plaque index (TQHPI) score in children aged 6 to 10 years old.
Methods: This randomized, controlled clinical trial used toothbrush prophylaxis while using a mobile application (Disney Magic Timer App) as the experimental group and toothbrush prophylaxis alone as the control group. Based on a pilot study, the sample size was determined to be 28 subjects. Plaque scores were recorded before and after toothbrush prophylaxis using Turesky modification of the Quigley-Hein plaque index (TQHPI) to compare control and experimental groups. This study is approved by the IRB.
Results: Data has been collected from 10 subjects split equally in the control and experimental groups. The mean for the Control group is 1.818 ± 0.841 as the initial and 0.782 ± 0.722 as the final TQHPI, with a difference of 1.036. The mean for the Experimental group is 1.706 ± 0.566 as the initial and 0.904 ± 0.198 as the final TQHPI with a difference of 0.802. Statistical analyses will be completed after all data has been collected.
