Purpose: Pediatric patients present with a variety of cardiovascular conditions that require careful understanding to provide safe and effective dental management. These patients require close medical and dental coordination. It is imperative for the pediatric dentist to have access to accurate medical histories of these patients. The aim of this retrospective chart analysis is to show the value of access to information available from the medical home to the dental home. Histories of pediatric cardiology patients are complex and dental providers should not be reliant on caregiver(s) to provide an accurate medical history, regardless of caregiver(s) socioeconomic status.
Methods: Retrospective chart review of pediatric cardiology patients who have Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta as their medical home and dental home between the dates of July 1, 2023 - July 31, 2023. Patients were located using Dentrix (electronic dental record) and Epic (electronic health record). Medical history and socioeconomic status data was completed by a single examiner who was trained in both Dentrix and Epic.
Results: Final Data Pending
Conclusion: This study will support that pediatric dentists should have access to the patient’s EHR through active staff or privileges, which would increase accuracy of information and lead to higher quality of care and increased safety. Anticipated findings are that dental providers should not be reliant on caregiver(s), regardless of their socioeconomic status, to provide the medical history of pediatric cardiology patients.
