413 - Knowledge of Early Airway Intervention Among Pediatric Dentists and Residents

Abstract:

Purpose:  The aim of this cross-sectional study is to assess the current understanding and mindset of pediatric dentists regarding knowledge of early airway intervention and myofunctional therapy in pediatric populations


Methods:  A 12-item questionnaire was emailed to current active members of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD). The questionnaire asks about provider training, background knowledge, and comfort levels providing early airway intervention and myofunctional therapy to their patients.

Results: The study found a significant difference attributable to years in practice and frequency of discussing baby-led weaning and myofunctional therapy. The study also found that the most commonly assessed sign of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) by pediatric dentists and residents was enlarged tonsils, while the least commonly assessed was chapped/puffy lips. Additionally, the study found that bruxism and snoring were the most frequently assessed symptoms of SDB by pediatric dentists and residents. 

Conclusion: The findings of this study demonstrate an increase in frequency of discussing baby-led weaning with increased experience in practice, as well as enlarged tonsils and mouth breathing being the most commonly assessed signs of SDB by pediatric dentists and residents. Further research may be useful in pinpointing sources of discomfort with counseling on myofunctional therapy.
