Purpose:
The purpose of this research project is to explore the correlation between reduced utilization of dental services among children in rural areas compared to urban and suburban counterparts in New York. This study seeks to identify barriers to accessing dental care.
Methods: Quantitative data was collected from the New York State Department of Health to analyze the distribution of pediatric dentists per county. Additionally, records from the New York State Medicaid Program were obtained to evaluate service utilization patterns among Medicaid-enrolled children, and information from the Center for Health Workforce Studies and the Community Healthcare Network was gathered to focus on the availability of pediatric dentists. For data analysis, we identified correlations between geographic location and dental service utilization rates.
Results: Approximately 40% of dentists in New York are enrolled in Medicaid; however, 25% of New York State dentists enrolled in Medicaid do not provide services to Medicaid patients. Surveys indicate that rural parents and guardians face multiple barriers, including longer travel distances to dental clinics and limited public transportation options, greatly contributing to reduced utilization of dental services among rural children and teens.
Conclusion: From analyzing the statistical data, we identified key factors contributing to the reduced utilization of dental services among rural children and teens in New York State, including a shortage of pediatric dentists, limited acceptance of Medicaid, and significant transportation challenges. These findings underscore the necessity for targeted interventions to improve access to pediatric dental care in underserved areas.
