Purpose: The aim of this study is to assess the compliance of patients and guardians regarding the use of Prevident 5000 Plus. The study will investigate whether guardians are obtaining the toothpaste and if patients are using it as prescribed.
Methods: Children, 6-18 years old, with at least one incipient or cavitated lesion and their guardians were contacted 4-6 weeks after the prescription and answered a survey regarding usage patterns and any encountered difficulties.
Results: Parents are highly motivated to pick up Prevident prescriptions as 94% of parents acquired the prescription within one week or attempted to. The most common barrier to picking up the prescription is that the pharmacy had to order it. While patients are using the Prevident at least once a day, 44% rinse after use and 46% do not wait the full 30 min prior to eating and drinking.
Conclusion:
Reaching out to pharmacies to regularly stock Prevident and reinforcing instructions with parents and patients after acquisition could help address the main barriers to benefitting from Prevident.
