Abstract:

Purpose:
To evaluate the current knowledge and comfort level of pediatric dentists regarding Lesion Sterilization and Tissue Repair (LSTR) in the District of Columbia, Maryland, and Virginia (DMV) area.




Methods:
A survey was electronically distributed to pediatric dentists in the DMV region. The survey included questions on clinical practices, provider demographics, and various factors influencing the use of LSTR as a non-vital pulp therapy.




Results:
Thirty pediatric dentists of a possible 321 individuals completed the survey in entirety for a 9.4% response rate. Eighty-percent of respondents (24/30) reported that they have not utilized LSTR. Only 23% of pediatric dentists felt "very comfortable" to "somewhat comfortable" performing LSTR. Factors such as treatment time, cost, available evidence, technique sensitivity, lack of procedural guidelines, and patient follow-up were identified as key barriers to the utilization of LSTR.




Conclusions:
LSTR is recognized as a beneficial treatment option, however, there are barriers that affect its usage outside academic settings. Residency programs should continue to emphasize teaching innovative techniques like LSTR during residency training and pediatric dentists should seek out educational opportunities to learn more about this non-vital pulp therapy.
