Background:
The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends establishing a child’s dental home by age 1 which can reduce dental anxiety. Previous studies have shown a relationship between parents and their children’s dental fear and anxiety but have not explored if it affects when a child’s first visit is conducted. This study aims to seek a correlation between whether parental dental fear and anxiety resulted in a delay in children’s initial dental visits.
Methods:
A two-year cross-sectional anonymous survey study was conducted with children 6 years and under. A total of 100 surveys were completed. 10 surveys were excluded due to being incomplete resulting in 90 surveys qualifying to be used in the study. Each question is scored from 1 - 5 for a total score range of 5 - 25. A score of 14 and under indicated minimally anxious and a score of 15 and over indicated dental anxiety ranging from moderate to high.
