Success of Various Restorative Dental Treatments Completed under General Anesthesia
Ziarko A, Lee A, Montefiore Medical Center, Bronx, NY
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the success of various restorative dental procedures performed under general anesthesia.
Methods: A retrospective chart review was completed on patients ranging from 2-5 years old with ASA 1 Classification of Montefiore Medical Center's Division of Pediatric Dentistry, who underwent dental treatment under general anesthesia (GA) between the time period of July 1, 2018 to June 30, 2020. The patients included in this study returned for clinical and radiographic follow-up within 3 years of their initial procedure under GA.
Results: A total of 55 patients matched the inclusion criteria. Across these patients, radiographs were obtained for 495 teeth. Stainless steel crowns had the higher success rate (97.6%; 95% CI: 95.7%–99.5%), while posterior resin restorations had a lower success rate (81.4%, 95% CI: 72.3%–90.5%). These results were statistically significant p=0.001. Additionally, of the 157 patients ranging between 2-5 years old with ASA 1 Classification, only 55 patients returned for follow-up care.
Conclusion: Providers should consider full-coverage restorations such as stainless steel crowns over composite restorations due to their superior durability and longevity. Additionally, clinicians should educate patients and their families on the importance of routine dental recalls as it may help reduce the need for future operating room visits and encourage lifelong commitment to oral health.
