96 - Behavior Changes at Recall after Oral Conscious Sedation.

Abstract:

Purpose: This study aims to assess the effect of oral conscious sedation on future behavior during recall visits in pediatric dental patients aged 3 to 8 years. Specifically, it investigates whether sedation with midazolam or midazolam/hydroxyzine influences behavior during subsequent dental visits within one year.
Research: The study conducts a retrospective chart review of pediatric patients at NYU Langone Hospital - Brooklyn from May 2023 to July 2024. Eligible patients were those who received treatment with oral sedation (midazolam or midazolam/hydroxyzine) and had at least one recall appointment within a year. Exclusion criteria included patients with special needs, those who underwent treatment without sedation between appointments, and those with inconsistent behavior data

Methods: Data were collected on patient behavior at recall visits using the Frankl Behavior Rating Scale (1-4). The scale categorizes behavior from uncooperative (1) to definitely positive (4). The study aims to determine the percentage of patients with improved, consistent, or worsened behavior following sedation. 

Conclusions: Oral conscious sedation, particularly using midazolam or a combination with hydroxyzine, may influence long-term behavior in pediatric patients. By evaluating the impact on recall behavior, this study provides insight into the potential benefits of sedation in managing anxiety and improving future dental visits in young patients.
