Purpose: The purpose of this study was to determine any significant differences in age, gender, insurances accepted, services offered, number of years practicing, desired practice location before residency, and practice location post-residency between pediatric dentists who trained in an urban vs a rural setting.
Methods: NYU Langone Advanced Education in Pediatric Dentistry alumni who graduated from the Yakima, WA (rural) and San Diego, CA (urban) training sites between 2014-2022 were surveyed. Data collected included services offered, location of practice setting, age, and years in practice. Statistical analysis was completed.
Results: There were 25 participants, and no significant differences were found regarding age, gender, or number of years practicing. Four (16%) stated they intended to practice in a rural setting, 14 (56%) suburban, and 7 (28%) urban. Five (20%) practice in a rural setting, 13 (52%) suburban, and 7 (28%) urban, showing that most of the participants practice where they had intended to. Medicaid is accepted by 21 (100%) of Yakima participants and 3 (75%) of San Diego participants. Oral sedation is offered by 9 (43%) of the Yakima participants and 2 (50%) of the San Diego participants. In office general anesthesia is offered by 15 (71%) of the Yakima participants.
Conclusions: The were no significant differences in age, gender, insurances accepted, or services offered by participants, or number of years in practice. There was a statistically significant difference in where a resident trained and where they went on to practice.
